Expert Talk – John Hassall

5 August @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

We are delighted to welcome Lucinda Gosling, co-curator of our exhibition ‘John Hassall : Illustrator and Poster Artist’, to deliver our next Expert Talk.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, John Hassall was a household name, famous for his humorous magazine work, graphic covers, book illustrations, nursery pictures and, most of all, for his poster designs, which were to earn him the title of, ‘The Poster King’ at a time when the advertising hoardings were known as the ‘poor man’s picture gallery’. In this illustrated talk, Lucinda Gosling considers John Hassall’s life and career in the context of the time, and explains why he deserves to be remembered and celebrated for much more than his justly famous, ‘Skegness is SO Bracing’ poster.
