Expert Talk: Neo-Romantic Book Illustration

The talk will look at the brief flowering of what became known as Neo-Romanticism in the arts in the years immediately after WW2. In particular, it will explore its impact on book illustration and design through artists including John Minton, John Craxton, John Piper, Keith Vaughan, Susan Einzig and Robert Colquhoun, for leading publishers such as John Lehmann, Paul Elek and Frederick Muller.
The speaker, Martin Salisbury, studied Illustration at Maidstone College of Art in the 1970s before going on to work as an artist and illustrator, mainly in children’s publishing, fiction and non-fiction, working for many of the UK’s leading publishers. He has taught illustration at Cambridge School of Art since the 1990s and is now Professor of Illustration there. In recent years he has written a number of books on the subject of book illustration. His is author of The Snail that Climbed the Eiffel Tower and Other Works by John Minton (Mainstone Press, 2017).
